5 Tips to Help You on Your Next Interview

Living in a world where so much of our knowledge is attained by what we come across on Google, knowing what employers want to hear and see in an interview can be difficult.

Since the abundance of online information on interviewing can be conflicting, our recruiters want to give you the real scoop! Read on to discover how to nail your next interview!

Interview in a quiet, indoor setting

As more employers are conducting video and phone interviews instead of face-to-face interviews, the expectation is that you, the candidate, are responsible for creating a suitable space to interview in.

Show the employer that you take the job seriously by eliminating any background noise, such as the TV, barking dogs, cars, or music playing.

Interview
Dress professionally

When interviewing on video, dress professionally from head to toe. Set up your device on a table rather than holding your device the entire time. Sit at a desk or table rather than a couch, and log in to your video interview 15 minutes before the interview starts.

Interview
Know why you’re a good fit for the position

Research the company website before your interview. Note any values or mission statements and see if they align with yours.

Let the employer know your understanding of the company, and have a follow-up question prepared. Highlight the skills you can utilize for the position you are trying to get.

Be prepared and on time

Treat a phone or video interview the same as you would an in-person interview. This includes being on time.

Make sure you know where you are going for your interview, whether that be for a virtual or a face-to-face interview. If the interview is over the phone, be sure to answer the phone when the employer calls. If the phone disconnects at any point, call the employer right back.

Relax

Our recruiters are under pressure to find the perfect candidate to fill the position they are hiring for, but they don’t expect you to be perfect!

When candidates are excessively nervous, they often either talk too much or don’t talk enough. The answer? Take slow deep breaths and clear your mind.

It’s also okay to have scratch notes for a quick prompt if your mind goes blank. When in doubt, ask if the question has been answered thoroughly after giving your response.

Whether interviewing for a promotion or attending an interview for seasonal work, we all get butterflies. Wanting to make a good impression on the employer is a healthy mindset because it shows we care.

Keep in mind that your professionalism will be assessed on areas outside of the question-and-answer portion of the interview, including the environment you are interviewing in, non-verbal cues, and being on time.

When in doubt about what to do or say, just ask! Your recruiter wants you to get the job and is happy to help you every step of the way!
